Your Debt to Ireland

Wow, that is a pretty picture of the best country of the best people who have ever existed. Just remember kiddies, the Irish gave you:
  • Guinness
  • Jameson
  • Baileys
  • ^ Combine the above for "The Irish Car Bomb"
  • Great folk music
  • St. Patrick and his well celebrated day
  • Violence between the catholics and protestants for centuries longer than any other country. Yes, this shows dedication and tenacity.
  • Fiddles, sweet dancing, Notre Dame [the college & team].
Yes Jesus may be Jewish, but the Irish love him despite the fact that he's Jewish. Thinks about that for a moment. Pretty charitable huh?
Also some Irish people the world would be sucky without:

  • Kenneth Branagh
  • Colin Farrell
  • Liam Neeson
  • Conan Obrien
  • Enya
  • Dropkick Murphys
  • Flogging Molly
  • F. Scott Fitzgerald
  • C.S. Lewis
  • Oscar Wilde
...Just to name a few.

The Jews may have their comedians, and the Dutch may have their banks and money, but the Irishman is the everyman and the world is his for the taking.

  1. Dear Evan,

While your admiration for your heritage is admirable (and certainly letitimate), I have a few counter points.

First -- the dutch and banks? I'm afraid the Jews have the corner on the market there too. Not to nail the coffin on the Dutch forever, but...

Where the Irish have Colin Farrell, the Dutch claim Humphrey Bogart and Marlon Brando, not to mention Audrey Hepburn and yes, Pamela Anderson.

Many thanks also the Irish for the potato blight, and the IRA.

    And delicious beer :)

  2. I'm not thanking the Irish for Guinness. I don't think it to be as great as everyone makes it out to be.

  3. To add to awesome Dutchness, may I remind everyone of the Dutch East India Company. Imperialism just wouldn't have been the same without it.

As for your list of Irish stars, Evan:
Props to Branagh and Neeson, but Fitzgerald was a drunk, Lewis was hardly Irish, and did you really list Enya? REALLY!?! Also, I really don't think Conan's that funny...
The music is pretty awesome, though (Save for Enya. I'm so disappointed in you.)

I'd also like to add that I agree with Erin. I feel I'm much more indebted to the French and the Germans for their fine wine.

  4. I'm more Irish than Jewish. So I can get behind this.

  5. I think the point is, the Dutch lose.
